Practical ESOL Strategies

5 March and 19 March 2026
9.30 – 2.00 p.m.(Online)
Two days of practical strategies that can be utilised in either mainstream classroom
teaching or withdrawal support programmes.
Content will include:
• Using the information from the English Language Learning Progressions
and/or the ELLP Pathway to design effective learning experiences for
emerging bilingual learners.
• Engaging tasks to build oral language skills
• Explicit teaching of vocabulary
• Key resources and how they can be used effectively
• Planning practical tasks to use in classrooms or ESOL programmes
• Supporting English language learners with learning to read and write

April Holiday Workshops

 

Workshop 1: Supporting brand new learners of English

We have noticed that a number of schools are enrolling students who are recent migrants to Aotearoa and have
minimal English. Teachers are not sure where to start and how to best support these learners.. This online workshop
is suitable for anyone working with students who are beginning to learn English in the mainstream.
Date and Time: Thursday 16 April, Online, 9:30am – 12:30pm
We will cover:
• What’s important for students at early Foundation stage of the English Language
Learning Progressions?
• What type of support programmes do these learners need?
• How to support them in both mainstream classrooms and ESOL programmes.
• Where do we start and what vocabulary needs to be explicitly taught?
• Resources that are available to teachers
• Practical Strategies to use with these learners.

Workshop 2: Teaching Vocabulary Explicitly

A workshop for all teachers. It is not just our English Language Learners who need to develop a wide vocabulary.
Vocabulary is a crucial aspect of language development for all ākonga in any language learning medium.
Date and Time: Friday 17 April, Online, : 9.30am – 12.30pm
We will cover:
• Why is developing a wide vocabulary so important?
• What are the essential aspects of “knowing a word”
• Which words do we need to teach explicitly?
• How do we seamlessly include explicit vocabulary teaching across the curriculum?
• A range of practical strategies for teaching vocabulary across the curriculum will also be part of the
workshop.
