Professional Development for Provisionally Registered Teachers, 2021


In 2021, we will again be offering a series of workshops designed to support beginning teachers. There will be a focus on Literacy, however, we are excited to announce that we will also be offering further workshops that include Maths, and The Arts.

The eight workshops will run during Terms 1, 2 and 3. A differentiated programme is offered for teachers of Years 1-3 and Years 4-8. They are designed for PRTs in their first year of teaching or teachers who are new to the NZ schooling system. Enrolments will be taken for both individual workshops or for the entire programme of eight workshops.


The programme will be as follows:

Workshops 1 and 2: Teaching Reading

  • Essential components of an effective reading programme.
  • Differences between reading to, shared reading and guided reading and including all these approaches in your literacy programme.
  • Differentiated teaching for students including the specific teaching of phonological awareness and phonics.
  • Purposeful literacy tasks for independent learning.
  • Using assessment information formatively in reading.
  • The links between oral language and reading.

Workshops 3 and 4: Teaching writing

  • Organising a writing programme.
  • Essential components of a writing lesson.
  • The importance of modelling and different ways to model writing
  • The place of oral language and writing

Workshop 5: Supporting English Language Learners with literacy

  • Supporting English language learners (ELLs) with learning to read and write.
  • Practical ways of scaffolding literacy for ELLs.
  • Using the key resources i.e SELLIPS, ELIP, ELLP Pathway.

Workshops 6 and 7: Maths
The focus for the workshops will be developing effective teaching of mathematics through:

  • Building content knowledge of the number framework and the progression across curriculum levels.
  • Unpacking assessment - including Jam and GloSS and using these formatively for teaching and learning.
  • Exploring resources and effective pedagogy to support the teaching of strategies and other mathematical content.
  • Linking number to other strands.

Workshop 8: The Arts
How can “The Arts” promote and enhance literacy programmes?

  • Purposeful and engaging tasks that link with literacy and inquiry.
  • A practical and hands-on day.
  • Keeping art fun, but still challenging and aligning it with other curriculum areas.
  • Using the arts to enhance your classroom environment.

The venue for all workshops will be St Columba Centre, Vermont St, Ponsonby. Parking is available onsite, at the rear of the building.

All workshops will run from 9.30-3pm

Workshop 1: Reading Thursday 18th February
Workshop 2: Reading Thursday 11th March
Workshop 3: Writing Thursday 25th March
Workshop 4: Writing Thursday 13th May
Workshop 5: English Language Learners Thursday 3rd June
Workshop 6: Mathematics Thursday 24th June
Workshop 7: Mathematics Thursday 5th August
Workshop 8: The Arts Thursday 26th August

The discounted rate for the eight workshops is $ 795+ GST per teacher. The cost for enrolling for individual workshops is $120 + GST per workshop. Please note that you must enrol for both workshops for reading, writing and mathematics. Morning tea will be provided, however participants will need to bring their own lunch.

In-school support for PRTs

In addition, in 2021 we will also be offering in-school support to PRTs attending our workshops, for an additional cost. Please contact Jane van der Zeyden for further details of how that would work for your school and the costs. We will tailor that package to your individual needs.
