For many years, teaching to a specific genre each term has been how teachers have approached their writing programmes. How can we adapt this so that children are engaged and motivated with their writing? The Literacy Learning Progressions state that children “understand their purpose” for writing, and “have an awareness of their audience.” What does this look like in the classroom?
Does the following sound familiar?
Ø It’s hard to fit in the time for a quality writing programme
Ø The children are not engaged and motivated to write
Ø Maori and Pasifika are achieving well below
Ø Boys won’t write
Ø I’m trying to write about their personal experiences, but they don’t have any personal experiences to write about
Ø How will they know what to write about if I don’t teach genre?
Ø I don’t have the time to mark every piece of writing
Ø The writing results are worse than the reading results
Ø It’s just too hard to cater to all of the different abilities in my classroom
Ø I haven’t learnt anything new with this PD. It has been a waste of my time
Ø What do I do with my ELLs?
